Lunch With The Irish

Remember that time we were told that Conor McGregor would knockout Jose Aldo inside 1 round? Well if you forgot then well I helped you out there. McGregor became the Featherweight champ with just one punch and a hammer fist.

So why you enjoy your Friday slice of pizza or your soup, just remember the King from Ireland hasn’t been booked for a fight in 2017. I am quite concerned about that right now. Need a Conor fight as much as I have been waiting on Chris Arnaudo to write an article(newsflash thats probably never happening again).

Lunch Time Laughs

We are back at lunch time again today, and no heroics today. But we get the best of Frank Caliendo at ESPN College Gameday last year at Utah. Caliendo does everyone from Al Pacino to his awesome version of Jon Gruden.

“The sheriff..I don’t even know why I call him that”. Every time I see this video I cry from laughter. So why you’re eating your hoagie today at lunch, take some time to watch Frank and his impersonations.

Men’s League

Every Monday or Tuesday night, I get into my car, pick up a couple friends and I drive down to the Rhode Island Sports Center. No it’s not sports bar or a gym, it’s a hockey rink. For those of you who don’t know, I am a big time men’s league hockey player. I play for the famous club called Italia, sponsored by the famous Franklin sub shop Ferrara’s Market. As an all-star goal scorer, I have found my calling. The men’s league game is a lot different than the high school and the college game that I have watched for years.

Men’s league has all kinds of levels. You have your guys who never gave up the dream and play competitively in A divisions all around and travel all over the country for tournaments. Those guys played Division 3 hockey and held onto the dream throughout JR hockey. Then you have the guys who played a bit, let it go and then got back into it just to have something to do. I like that kind of hockey; competitive enough to play the game, but not-so competitive where they dwell on a loss. Then the last style is the real old man’s game. I enjoy this as well, I have actually played a bit of this hockey in the past couple years. These guys are just looking for an hour or two of leisure once or twice a week. There is no score kept, just some good fun with the fellas and a cold one or two afterward.

The man’s game is different from everything else because of the comradery you have in the locker room both before and after. That stuff could bring you all the way up after a bad day of school, and now the same goes for the tough days at work. You know when you get to that rink that there will be a laugh or two before the tilt. But that comradery doesn’t get lost if you lose the game, it sticks around and everyone is cool and calm afterward.

Leagues can get chippy, and I have witnessed a tussle or two in my day. But you always realize that the guys on the other side are just like you. Hardworking and determined to make an honest living and play some hockey on the side. Cooler heads prevail about 89% of the time, with those 11% of times meaning yeah something went wrong, but we are all adults here and will settle it that way.

I love men’s league hockey. It is something I look forward to every single week, and it is my favorite part of the week. I have a good stat line right now, but being a part of a team again is one of my favorite things ever. Just means you see who you click with on the ice and get to hang around with a group of fellas at least one night a week. Hockey, there really is nothing else like it.

Oh, and if you didn’t know, Ferrara’s Market will roll in every single one of their games for the remainder of this season. With that being said #RollPasta.

Go Tribe Go

Last night, we saw the Cleveland Indians take game 1 of the World Series after beating the Chicago Cubs 6-0.

After being written off a before even the ALDS, the underdog Indians took it to the Cubs and ace Jon Lester. Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, and Cody Allen continued to look dominate in the postseason shutting down the Major League wins leader.

Roberto Perez was the spark of the tribes offense. Perez went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 home runs.

Now it’s still a long series but taking game 1 was a huge step for Believeland. 24 of the last 28 teams to win game one have gone on to win the series. So a loss in game 2 would definitely hurt a the Cubs, who struck out 15 times in game 1.

Will the Cursed Cubs be able to come back and win game 2? We will see as game 2 is tonight.

That Fantasy Time Of The Year

That time of year has come, training camp has started and football is only a few weeks away. Meaning one of the best pastimes for males aged 12-75 is about to start. If you guess twilight golf then your months off, that started weeks ago. The right answer here is fantasy football. A season like no other, and this one should be memorable.

For me, I get to prove myself to my league of extraordinary gentlemen, just a bunch of young bucks vying for the Towski(league title). I got AJ Green and Julio Jones rejoining the squad as my keepers. I’m taking a look at some young draftees as well. Names like Ezekiel Elliot and Laquon Tredwell come to mind at this time. I’m not giving away my secrets but would like to point out that I beat Chris(fellow B’ship writer) big time last season. In fact my bench out scored his starters, remember not all heroes wear capes.

Now a big dilemma is the whole Tom Brady suspension. If your a smart owner, and Brady is there in like rounds 5-7, you’d be a moron not to take him. As a fan of the game, and someone whose seen Brady play(and lose hint hint December 6th 2015), he is too good to pass up. Just make sure to take a credible back-up like Blake Bortles or Philip Rivers. Two guys who can get the job done during Brady’s absence. If Derek Carr is there he’s also a name to try to remember. Kid has some major talent and can get the job done for Oakland with the help of Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper.

Why does fantasy rule? I feel it rules solely based off of the idea that you have a guy in every game. You now care about that 4:35 NFC South game that has Atlanta going to Tampa Bay. You have Danny Woodhead heading over to Denver to see if he can get you those 4 catches and 67 yards you need. It just gives you more of a reason to watch the best sport on earth.

Let me tell you a quick story. Opening week last year my squad Chips and Dip was down by about 37 points. We had 3 guys left, the Eagles defense, Julio Jones and Mike Wallace. We knew we weren’t going to get positive points from someone but didn’t know who. Low and behold Julio Jones gives us a 35 point night. And that Bird Gang defense gave us 6 due to turnovers! All we needed was Mike Wallace to go either 0 or positive. We got that and a little more. Wallace had like 4 catches for 44 yards. Chips and Dip took down the foe and started off the year right.

God I love football.

Am I not so high up on Cam Newton this year? Yeah I am not high on Super Cam. I think there could be major struggles from Newton because of his lack of confidence. Lack of confidence? Watch the SB and then you will see what I’m talking about. He’s getting Kelvin Benjamin back, but he could struggle even with him back. I don’t know guys, could be a down year for Cam.

Take warning, it’s taking over our lives once again. Tell your girlfriends and wives and significant others, that football and fantasy are back. Tell them you still love them, but football ALWAYS comes first. Now I realize why I don’t have a girlfriend, this paragraph is the exact reason. Well fantasy football and the NFL all kick off soon, so I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Age Old Debate

A rivalry that has plagued mankind for centuries. A disdain for each other like no other. The level of hatred of these two matches levels like McGregor-Diaz, Sox-Yankees, Bruins-Habs and Rock-Austin. If you have never contemplated this over your lifetime then you have not lived. So here it is, is ketchup or mustard the proper condiment for the hot dog.

You’re probably saying now, Jack why the hell are you talking about this? Hot dogs and sports go hand in hand. Unless you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you have scarfed down dozens upon dozens of these bad larrys. Hot dogs could be the greatest appetizer ever, yeah I eat them as the main course and as an app. But what is the proper topping for the dog.

So who doesn’t like a good hot dog on a hot summer day. I know recently crowned Stanley Cup Champion Phil Kessel sure doesn’t. Mark Sanchez is also a big fan of the grilled great one. I’d ask what they prefer but I don’t speak to them.

I have always been a fan of both of these condiments. It just comes down to a simple idea. What gives the dog the better taste. So here’s my answer….mustard.

Yes, I am a huge fan of mustard. Mustard is the better choice for the grilled masterpiece. The hot dog is perfect with mustard. I feel, now this is my personal opinion, that ketchup overpowers the taste of the food. Ketchup is perfect on a burger, honestly is better on a burger than mustard. But on a hot dog, it just doesn’t take the cake.

Now you may be asking, Jack have you ever had a hot dog with ketchup? Yeah I have, I had a personal taste test about two days ago. Mustard won, and it won convincingly. Relish didn’t come in second, wasn’t even in third. Ketchup was a good second, but it’s just not the top choice. And if you think a different way then well that’s your opinion and you can kick rocks.

I just took an entire blogpost to explain why I think why the food of America’s pastime is best with mustard. I’m not going to put a poll in here because honestly with my website my rules. So jokes on you guys.

Maybe I’ll debate the next biggest rivalry, it also involves the hot dog. Hot dogs against burgers could be the next grill fight that I talk about. Why not, it is summer after all and it’s all about grilling and getting schwifty.

The Summer Preview

Hello avid B-Ship readers!

With the summer coming and the school year at a close. I thought I would let you know what exactly is going on with the site.

Let me begin.

Our staff right now is a smaller one. Chris, Tommy, Kyle, Uncle Rico, Hacksaw, Tom and I are the writers. If you have interest in writing for the site, please feel free to shoot me an email. Send a sample piece along with it, and I’ll read it and then maybe we can figure something out.

Next order of business, we are considering re-launching the podcast idea. We have two in mind right now. But want to do some sort of poll or contest. I don’t know what the winner would get but hey it would be pretty cool!

We are mulling over the idea of a t-shirt and hat combo. We are looking for a business partner in that. So if there are people out there that are interested, let this guy know.

I appreciate every reader, and there voices have been heard with a lot of the sites content. Just trying to get the #BrotherShipMovement in full force again!!
