The Claret Jug is one of the most prestigious trophies in the entire golf world. It is awarded to the winner of The Open Championship. Now why would I be writing about this tournament? Well because it starts up this week from Royal Troon, and I’m pretty excited about our third major of the year.
A few weeks back, Dustin Johnson came from behind on Sunday and took home the US Open title. Johnson was awarded the championship but we were all winners due to Paulina Gretzky walking away(man she is a fox). Johnson will look to go back to back, in what is the last major before the Olympics. An event that Johnson will not be competing in due to the Zika Virus.
A name to really watch will obviously be Jordan Spieth. Spieth needs to bounce back big time after a really sub-par outing at the US Open. He needs to control his emotions at Royal Troon, if he doesn’t he will definitely be in trouble.
Rickie Fowler is the other young gun that I think needs to bounce back at The Open. If he doesn’t he will continue to fall deeper and deeper into the ranks. Rickie is a top player in the game but sure hasn’t been playing like it as of late. A good showing will be huge for Rickie this week.
Lots of guys will not be competing in the Olympics, I referenced DJ already. Another big name is Jason Day. Day is a guy who the Olympics would kill to have, but due to that Zika Virus, there will be no J-Day at the Games in Rio. Plenty of names will continue to drop off the ranks of the Games, so there will be more and more looking at The Open as their last big tourney before the PGA Championship. Golf might be in the mix next time around, unless their is a premium spot hosting the games, Rio has been a dud so far in terms of golf.
Royal Troon could be a tough course for some of the younger guys. I really don’t know too much about this course. Holes 7 and 8 will provide the much needed drama that we see with every tournament. And per usual, the weather over in the Scotland will play a factor, especially on 7 and 8. Should be an interesting course of events.
My guy this time around is going to be Lee Westwood. I like the first time winners in the Majors this time. Westwood is a great golfer and fun to watch. He is respectable and well it’s his time to win one. If not him, my other guys are Jason Day, Sergio Garcia(kills me to say that), Phil Mickelson, Spieth and let’s go with a wild card pick Colin Montgomerie(53 year old returning to the tourney after a 6 year absence). Guys who I want to see make a run are Padraig Harrington, Scott Piercy and let go with Zach Johnson.
It all starts late tomorrow night, should be a classy weekend of golf.
