March is right around the corner, and with March there are two things to keep in mind. One is St Patrick’s Day, everyone loves that holiday. The real reason why March rules is because of March Madness, and the NCAA tourney just gets me going. So here are a few teams that I expect to hopefully make a splash in a month or so.
A name that has been synonymous with winning over the last few years is the Kentucky Wildcats. Coach Cal and the Cats have been a bit inconsistent coming into the tourney time this season. The Cats showed their highest potential with the win at South Carolina a week or so back. Tyler Ulis is a man on a mission right now, and this kid is proving he can do it with and without a cast of characters. He may need a hand from Isaiah Briscoe down the line, as well as the kid Murray. But I could see the Wildcats easily as an Elite 8 threat.
Iowa State was a championship runner-up on my bracket last season. Then UAB came along and slapped them in the face and said we will see you kid. This season the Cyclones have been hot and cold, but have done their job when needed. Georges Niang is a guy who can and will take over a game or a conference tourney. This year I think he is poised to take over the NCAA tourney. I want to see them on the Final Four stage, let’s hope there isn’t a choke job in the future with the Cyclones.
Shaka Smart goes into Austin and says “Time to start my own brand of Texas basketball”. And would you look at the Longhorns, they’re a credible threat in the Big 12 again, with a 3-2 record against top 5 opponents, the Longhorns look like giant slayers. I am quite impressed with them, but I need a big conference tourney out of Shaka and company. If this guy is nominated for coach of the year, he is getting robbed; he brought Texas back into contention again.
Last team is the good ole Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. This team led by Coach Mike Brey looks poised to make a run like last season. They lost a few fellas from last year’s team, but have beaten some of the best this season without them. But with Demetrious Jackson and Zack Auguste, I think the boys from South Bends chances this time around. Jackson is a kid who plays over 30 minutes a night, and is one of the more talented guards that have gone under the radar this year. The Irish have 5 guys who average at least 10 a game as well, so they have a plethora of scoring options, and have guys who play a lot of minutes, which I think is always a good thing.
Those are just 4 teams as of right now; I leave LSU off because I think they’re overrated. You are reading that right, they are totally misusing Simmons and they do not seem to care. They will probably have an early exit and by next season, Simmons will be making the big bucks playing in Philly or LA. But watch for these 4 teams on selection Sunday and look for the 1s in their region
